GROUNDBREAKING OF MENTARANG INDUK HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT BY THE PRESIDENT, A REPRESENTATION OF THE GOVERNMENT'S COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING GREEN ENERGY

On Wednesday, March 1, 2023, President Joko Widodo officially laid the first stone or groundbreaking for the Mentarang Induk Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) project which is planned to be operated by a joint venture company between PT Kayan Patria Pratama Indonesia and Sarawak Energi Berhad from Malaysia.

President Jokowi in his remarks expressed his happiness over the start of the groundbreaking for this project which is being collaborated with Malaysia as proof of the friendship between the two countries.

Representing the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Mr. Yudi was present as the Head of the PMO Division of the Committee for the Acceleration of Priority Infrastructure Provision (KPPIP) for the Energy, Electricity, Smelter, and Technology Sector who said that "The Mentarang Induk Hydroelectric Power Plant is one of the National Strategic Projects in Permenko number 21 of 2022, which receives special attention, because in addition to providing green energy that will later supply the Kalimantan Industrial Park Indonesia (KIPI), where the EV industry will be built, both cars and batteries, as well as aluminum processing, and petrochemicals".

The Mentarang Induk Hydroelectric Power Plant is located on the Mentarang River, approximately 35 kilometers upstream from Malinau City in Malinau Regency, North Kalimantan Province. Citing the PT KHN page, the location of the hydroelectric power plant was chosen based on topographic and geographical conditions, with good access and maximum river coverage area from the Mentarang River and its tributary, the Tubu River.

Having an investment value of 2.6 billion USD, and will later become the largest hydroelectric power plant in Indonesia, with a dam dimension of 235 m high and 812 m wide. Having a construction completion target in 2029, its construction is projected to absorb 5,000 local workers.

The Mentarang Induk Hydroelectric Power Plant is planned to have a capacity of 1,375 MW which has the potential to produce 9 Terawatts of electricity per hour. The type of dam proposed is a type of concrete-coated landfill or Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam (CFRD) which is designed with a dam peak height of around 220 meters and a length of around 750 meters.

The Mentarang Induk Hydroelectric Power Plant is expected to provide economic benefits both in terms of providing employment, and increasing the economy through irrigation, in addition this hydroelectric power plant will provide green energy for the green industry to realize the Government's environmental conservation commitment.
