Based on the results of a study conducted by the Ministry of Transportation in 2015, the development of the port will increase the volume of container traffic to 12.4 million TEUs by 2039. This increase in container traffic volume comes from demand from the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone (KEK) to Jambi Province and it is assumed that the port will receive additional demand from four competitor ports, namely the Port of Singapore, Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Port Klang and Penang Port.
